We've become dependent upon phones, but they evolved too. Cellular phones operate on similar principles as computers hooked to servers. Now if cell phones could contact each other, that would be even better, IMO. But, guess what? If you could do that no one could bill you!!!! The good news is that the cellular design is pretty efficient and it scales nicely. So overall, not too bad. I miss the old FM walkie-talkie.... Not!

When I managed a computer network, I was a proponent of peer-to-peer computing for the vast majority of computer installations. I shared services through proxies or servers, but only when people needed them.

Central IM people want big budgets, big staffs, big servers. For some things it is essential, but for many things it isn't. My company's network is so restrictive that it is actually hard to use for people like me. They've outsourced all the nerds and now have a bunch of white collar know-nothings running contracts through IBM.

We get to pay 2x for the equipment (vs. Dell) for inferior performance. What a deal!!

Something else to think about.
