Jason, I think that there are some distinctions between CF, MMC and SDMC...

...with regard to the proprietary features and the market demand for the products.

CF

***least proprietary of 3 ('987 only)
***market primarily digital cameras (divided into a smaller target market between
CF/SmartMedia/Memory Stick camps), PocketPC/WinCE handhelds (overshadowed by
Palm and Handspring) and MP3 players (overshadowed by SmartMedia and non-flash players)
***many producers (unlicensed card assembers)
***too big for handsets

MMC

***intermediately proprietary ('987 + MMC interface)
***major market handheld computing and MP3
***rides on coattails of SDMC (non-secure solution)
***multiple manufacturers (essentially same as CF)
***more suitable for smaller devices such as handsets
***successor to CompactFlash???

SDMC

***most proprietary (Toshiba/SanDisk/Matsushita)
***major markets handheld devices, handsets, MP3
***secure solution for copywritten digital commerce
***growing support base
***fewer producers (Panasonic? Toshiba? SanDisk?)
