NEC Mulls Boosting High-Speed Rambus DRAM
Production

Dow Jones Newswires

TOKYO -- NEC Corp. (NIPNY or 6701) is studying increasing production of
high-speed Direct Rambus dynamic random access memory units in the next fiscal year
starting April, a company spokesman said Friday.

Rambus DRAMs have a data-transfer speed of more than twice that of older DRAMs.

"It's true the study is going on. But, no final decision has been made as we haven't yet set
the budget for the next fiscal year," the spokesman said.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Friday that the Japanese electronics giant will
boost its monthly output of Rambus DRAMs to 5 million units (on 128-megabit
memory conversion) by September from the current 2 million units.

Memory unit production will be lifted at its chip plants in Japan, the U.K. and China, the
economic daily added.

Demand for Rambus DRAMs, used in personal computers, is expected to rise sharply
due to U.S. Intel Corp.'s (INTC) procurement of the memory units for its new
microprocessing unit "Pentium 4".
