I'd been a skeptic before the article, but if what the author is saying about how far away the technology is from being competitive in the consumer's mind with today's nifty form factor phones, then it's going to be a real uphill struggle for the SPs, IMHO***. Let's see, with 3G we can get horoscopes in color, watch Tiger Wood stroke a two pixel ball, and be fed dis-information from our brokerages on "alerts" in order for us to make foolish trading decisions based on proprietary and biased information. Have I got this about right? Today, I'm starting to see more and more cell phones in my environment. I swear, the typical conversation goes like this - I'm in the college library, the pretty co-ed sitting three monitors over gets the call (she'd failed to switch to vibrator/silent mode) : "Oh hi, Jim, yeah, I'm at the library with Bill. I'll be here for a while then I'm going to dinner. So, I'll call. Gotta go. Bye." When I pointed out to her that her etiquette wasn't quite up to library standards, she got huffy, claiming she was a trend-follower, i.e. everyone is doing it. Grrr. I can see the creation of this vast new mobile wireless world to be endlessly tedious, tormenting to workers who'll never be able to escape a demanding boss and the inane millions of conversations that dominate cell phone use now. Millions of calls that never go beyond - I'm at the library, I'm at the store, I'm on my way to the store, I'm on my way home, where are you? I'm on my way to pick up the kids, where are the kids? Can't we call 'em and find out? Yup, a brave new world. Just not a lot of wit. Best, Ray ***Not to worry about the Service Providers though, they plan to simply spin out the wireless businesses into IPOs and let the damn fool retail investor get his comeuppance once again, just as was the case with Iridium. So, the equity holder is going to get it in the shorts once again. BT just announce this deal this week. Looks like a great short candidate in the offing, or is that offering? Or, how long can these guys keep offing the retail player? I guess P.T. Barnum had some words on the matter.......
