Cisco Systems will provide the core IP network for BT Cellnet’s 3G wireless services that will provide access to email, multimedia content, e-commerce and location-based services.

Under the agreement, Cisco will be responsible for the IP-based technology that transports data between carrier networks and BT Cellnet’s radio transmitters.

According to Cisco, its switches and IP router overlay will be installed and operational by the end of the year.

The deal builds on a two-year relationship with BT Cellnet and Motorola to develop infrastructure for BTs GPRS services, and brings the number of Cisco’s European IP backbone contracts for wireless carriers to 13.

According to Datamonitor analyst Tim Gower, Cisco has focused on developing its IP backbone expertise, rather than trying to offer end-to-end solutions like Ericsson, Nokia, Lucent and Nortel. Gower explained: Cisco has been quite clever about this. Through their joint agreement with Motorola they’ve been quite specific about what part of the network they want to concentrate on. <<
