President Johnson was the last president before Clinton to have a balanced budget.

Inexplicable, isn't it.

(Ever hear of something called the welfare state?)

The man should be in jail. Not in the Whitehouse.

On what charge?

Scumbria,

President Johnson was the last president before Clinton to have a balanced budget. In the interim we had Republican Presidents for 16 out of 20 years, and the National Debt increased by 3000%.

Bingo!

I think you inadvertently stumbled on the answer to your question about the deficits and debt, and why Johnson was the last president to have balanced budget. (Actually, we came close under Nixon in 1974)

Johnson and Democrats for example initiated Medicare, which went from 0 to $216 billion. Medicaid went from virtually 0 to $117 billion, other "Means tested" (welfare like) programs went from $5 billion to $235 billion.

These programs comprise of $568 billion dollars of spending that virtually didn't exist when Johnson took office. The Johnson and Democrats put us on this track to $6 trillion debt, while FDR set up the Social Security ponzi scheme that now has $17+ trillion of unfunded liabilities.

Joe

Yes. The last roundabout started with Johnson. "The great society, the war on poverty, hey LBJ, how many boys you gonna kill today?". Johnson was the worst President in the last 100 years...
