What do you expect a defense attorney to say? That his client is guilty? What is he doing giving a public statement, anyway? He's trying to bring public pressure to bear in order to help his client. I don't know what it's like in Massachussetts but here in Fairfax the forces of law and order are strict, but not corrupt. People from other places often find to their dismay that things which are ignored in other places are not tolerated here, e.g., a few guys standing around in front of a convenience store having a few beers on a Friday afternoon are going to get arrested for drunk in public or public consumption of alcohol. The local defense attorneys call it "Hispanic in public" because it's a cultural norm in Central America and the guys who get arrested are usually Central American. And God help you if you decide to take a leak in an alley, you're going to get arrested for exposing yourself in public (aka weenie-wagging)!
