Sonic investors prefer life outside limelight

by Nunyo Demasio
Seattle Times staff reporter

...But a few minority investors, whose identities have been guarded with CIA-like secrecy, are significant because of the partnership structure of the group...

...One investor who has now been identified is Naveen Jain, the chief executive officer and founder of InfoSpace. The company, which has recently undergone some financial and management upheaval, is an Internet and wireless-content provider based in Bellevue...

...Jain, who is married with three children and lives in Medina, declined to be interviewed. He has a reputation for being extremely media friendly, but his reticence exemplified the secrecy regarding the Sonic investors...

..."It's because of two reasons and both are legit," said club president Wally Walker, who becomes chief executive officer of the franchise upon league approval in late March. "What happens if someone gets disapproved (by the NBA), which we don't foresee? But why subject anybody to that kind of embarrassment?...

..."And some people don't want their names out. They are in the distinct minority, but you have to respect their wishes."...

...Last September, Jain had been listed among Forbes 400's richest Americans, ranked with an estimated worth of $2.2 billion....

...Another investor already identified is John Stanton, the 45-year-old chairman and chief executive officer of Western Wireless and VoiceStream Wireless, based in Bellevue...

...The deal is expected to become official after the league's Board of Governors meeting in late March...
