Some Japanese guy was recently mumbling about the 3G winner is determined by whichever side China goes with.

The recent Red Herring article talked about the dominance of GSM in China, as if it is a negative. We know that is one of the most motivating factors for China to switch to CDMA.

We also know that multi-mode chip is coming, whether it is next week or next month or later this year. That is probably the official turning point from the 80/20 GSM/CDMA world to the 80/20 CDMA/others world.

It is quite apparently that there is major changing of the guards in the telecom industry. Nok, Mot and Ericy choke hold is about to be destroyed not only by the known names such as Samsung and Kyo but also names that the world has never heard of.

Unfortunately, most investors are unaware of these changes and still put the future winners and losers in the same basket of telecom stocks.

>>No one's talking much bout India just yet, and given the delays experienced with the rollout of CDMA in China I can understand the Q's reluctance to publicly voice their excitement re: this opportunity, but I suspect there's soon gonna be lots of CDMA handsets making there way over there. >>

It remains to be seen how quickly MTNL will be able to launch the WLL service to larger capacity. MTNL and BSNL are semi-govt organizations (monopolies). Let us see how fast they can act. MTNL is probably making a lot of noise partly because it needs to raise money on the NYSe with an ADR issue.

I don't see 80/20. It was my impression that Sulpulzio was indicating that the multi-mode chip will be out by the end of the year, and since wcdma is 2-3 years behind, that should be plenty of time to shake up the market and give substantial pause to those cdma carriers who have been claiming they will use wcdma for 3G, that is, particularly in Asia. It should mean that Qualcomm will maintain and increase its market share; the Euro baboons will still maintain their "GSM" fiction just out of spite and pride.
