Sure they did. And they have always been controversial. Remember Shay's Rebellion, or "don't tax me, don't tax thee, tax that man behind the tree". So I guess this nuttiness like the US having the highest taxes in the world, or that the rich should be taxed less because they use less government services is nothing new.

Yes but I think they would have been against imposing the same level of federal taxation that we have now.
