And for that, we must look to Washington, like it or not. They got us into this mess, and only they can get us out of it. <<<<< Ted, I agree with most of your post, but I don't believe that part about Washington getting us in and out of this mess. This morning on CNBC there was a guest, who was talking about the the cost of the energy crisis, and he said that the consumers in this country in the 4q-00 paid 506 billion more for energy, which breaks down into $500/ family for the 4q-00; and we are likely to have another $500/family for 1q-01. He feels that the increase in utility bills at Xmas time caused the big slowdown in Xmas spending and would continue for at least another 6 months. What we need is a realization of what got us into this energy mess, and as a nation we have to make decisions about what is the best plan to get us out of this. To just build more power plants using natural gas won't solve anything without solving the shortage of natural gas problem first. We need to drill more to find more gas and conserve more. More importantly we should have a national energy plan which will emphasize alternate sources of energy. Such a plan would energize the nation and solve our energy problems. But without a realization that a solution will require coal or nuclear in the near term with their attending problems just means that the $1600 tax rebate won't even pay for 2 yrs worth of energy increases. In the end, we are going to need a national concensus because there will be a lot of pain (relaxation of pollution standards, living with the possibility of a nuclear plant near you; putting conservation first by raising prices on energy; etc)involved. And the governments ability to dish out pain is mininal.
