There's not much in the Times currently, except a passing mentions in an AP story that is a bit disquieting. From a mostly favorable to W article, "Bush Aides Quickly Correct Mistakes" nytimes.com

John Ashcroft's nomination for attorney general was under intense attack
from Democrats who said he was too conservative. With guidance from
Bush's public relations team, Ashcroft told senators in four days of
confirmation hearings that he would serve ``all the people'' and enforce the
nation's laws despite ``personal preferences.'' In particular, he pledged not
to seek a Supreme Court reversal of a woman's right to abortion.

The soothing words took some steam out of Democratic efforts to cast
Ashcroft as a conservative zealot.

And I'm sure Ashcroft's testimony under oath as handled by W's PR firm was totally honest, too. Reminds me of another heavily handled confirmation hearing, though that one involved a lifetime appointment, unfortunately.
