Shares of ISP EarthLink were up (at one point as much as 14%) today on news that the company is dissolving its tightly knit deal with Sprint PCS. The two joined forces back when it seemed like customers might want to buy phone/ISP packages from the same place. Well, sure, but in the meantime phone companies have imploded, as have Internet companies, and the partners seemed to be bringing each other down. The original deal gave Sprint seats on EarthLink's board, as well as the right to be first in line to buy EarthLink if the company ever considered a sale. So, you ask, why do we care? Well, because of who might step in to bid for the company now that it's untangled. Rumors are circulating around Redmond. Ears first perked up when Microsoft cancelled its $400 MSN rebate program last week, which offered money back to computer buyers who signed three-year Internet service contracts (and was one of MSN's biggest subscriber magnets). Following today's Sprint announcement, EarthLink's President was quoted as saying, "The main thing is, we're now free to go out and have some of these discussions and try to better understand strategically if an alignment between ourselves others is a good idea." Microsoft isn't talking, but here's one thing we know: EarthLink has 4.7 million subscribers (making it the second largest ISP behind AOL's 27 million) and its financial position isn't that dire either. We checked in with research company Thompson Financial/Baseline last week for an unrelated story, and EarthLink showed up on a screen for stocks that were trading near the value of cash per share on hand (this was, of course, before the rumor-related runup)...hmmm...who would want a company with a dirt-cheap stock price, a whole lot of subscribers, and a ton of cash?
