Compaq Takes On EMC In SAN Market
(02/09/01, 2:56 p.m. ET) By Kim Renay Anderson, TechWeb News
In the race for dominance in the mid-range data storage market, the company best known for its PCs is moving up fast on the outside.

A new study by Gartner, Stamford, Conn., found that Compaq Computer Corp. has overtaken rivals Hewlett-Packard Co. (stock: HWP) and IBM Corp. (stock: IBM) and now ranks second in the mid-range storage market, up from seventh place in 1997. The mid-range market includes companies with as little as five servers up to those with as many as 100 servers.

Compaq (stock: CPQ) and industry leader EMC Corp. (stock: EMC) are now "neck and neck" in the storage area network (SAN) sector, said the study. In fact, Compaq has shipped more SANs than any other vendor, including EMC, Gartner said. Storage Technology Corp. (stock: STK) is in third place.

Compaq's strategy for going after EMC lies mainly in its StorageWorks product. Mark Lewis, vice president and general manager of Compaq's Enterprise storage group, said StrorageWorks is cheaper than EMC's Symmetric, but retains the same features as its rival's top SAN line. StorageWorks also has more up-to-date technology, Lewis said.

At the end of the year, Compaq is expected to introduce VersaStor, another software package aimed at mid-range storage needs.

Despite its efforts, some analysts say Compaq still lags well behind EMC, especially in providing mid-range service. Steve Duplessie of Enterprise Storage Group, Milford, Mass., said EMC's superior sales force gives it a big advantage, and pointed out that "last reported quarter, Compaq lost shares across the board, whereas EMC grew 50 percent."

William Hurley, analyst at the Yankee Group, Boston, said Compaq doesn't have the software to match EMC, which has increased its SAN software portfolio with its acquisition of SOFTWORKS, a maker of data storage management products.

Contrary to the Gartner study, Hurley doesn't think Compaq has a lock on the No. 2 spot in the market. "After EMC, there's a big dog fight for second place among Compaq, IBM, Sun, HP, and Dell," he said.

Still, Compaq does have its backers. "Specifically in the area of SAN management, I think that Compaq has very big lead on EMC," said Ron Johnson, an analyst with Denver's Evaluator Group.

With options expiring next friday, looks like CPQ may hold a tight line at 22.5 for the next five days.
