TGP,

I spend a lot of time in Europe, and they have learned all of our bad habits.

I lived in Oxford for part of high school. Back then it was a 10 minute walk and a 15 minute bus ride into town. Now it is a 20 minute drive in traffic, and a 15 minute walk from the parking lot.

That is progress for you!

Ted, Re: <The average consumption per person of the developed nations is far greater than the average in the developing nations. And the biggest piglet of them all is the US. >

The average production per person of the developed nations is far greater than the average in the developing nations. And the biggest producer of them all is the US.

tgptndr,

Do you think that that will still be true when oil is in short supply and/or at $40 per barrel? When we begin to run out of certain metals? When what fuel we have left has to be used for heating rather than production? There are very good reasons to start serious conservation now.

As for your statement that we produce more than the developing nations that is mostly true but there are exceptions to that rule, ie. Singapore.

But what's disconcerting is the number of developed nations that produce more than we do but consume less....such as Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, and Japan to name a few...and the difference in production value can be significant..Manu. Value Added Percaptia [MVAP]for Switzerland and Japan is $8,095 and $7091 respectively vs. $5229 for the US [see link below].
