Another looming event that will exacerbate the situation is the April implementation of market-to-market accounting rules, which will require Japanese companies to value their equity holdings in other companies at their current prices rather than the price at which they were bought. Japanese firms have traditionally relied on this questionable accounting practice to boost their balance sheets. The change has already put pressure on the Nikkei as companies unload holdings ahead of the implementation.

Seems to me that when April rolls around, the worst might already be over for the Nikkei....
