Interesting post...
From what I've seen (I'm now retired from
the IT business, thank God!), is the movement
toward SQL databases on a given mainframe (ALPHAS,
IBM, etc), accessed once again by a "Large" server
using 3rd party software (which may be modified
by the user), such as JAVA and all of its variations
(JAVA beans, applets) and finally routed to the end user via (guess what) CISCO routers. BTW, the OS on the
server is Win2000. This is the direction higher ed.
