Rudedog, I think the Q&A session following the earnings report should clear a lot of this up one way or another.

This is what management has said. Now it seems to me that if in fact management is lying
about a layoff they're in big time trouble....

"We're not making an announcement," said spokesman
Jim Mazzola. "We would certainly announce or
communicate to you if something like that were
going to happen."

``I can you tell you it's a rumor,'' chief executive Michael Dell said Friday.

Looks like the WSJ would rather quote unnamed
sources then the company....kind of makes me wonder
what the agenda is...especially when you consider
that they had to have known that in this environment
Dell would take a hit...

Re Rumored Dell Layoffs:
This is what I expect from the stated company goal to reduce expenses by 8 to 10%
Dell divisions have considerable autonomy, can chose how to do it. Some divisions growing rapidly, some are flat or even decreasing. One way is to use less overtime by moving people to another facility . Another is to produce more items per employee/shift or develop more efficient methods. Early retirement offered, esp for high paid executives. In some cases a pay cut or move to different facility which if not accepted results in termination.
. I would not call this a "layoff" as might result from closing a facility, but some who delight in trashing Dell
would love to report it as such. In Ireland, new Dell workers are trained by a separate company for about 6 months,
and if qualified be hired by Dell
Dell is going to need more people in Ft Worth, starting with 500 at leased facilities. Some may chose not to leave the delightful city of Austin and work in the outback(hehe) here, but it has advantages of being far cooler and less humid among others, and maybe Sullivans could build a steakhouse here.too.
Is Austin going to tell Jiamen or Penyang precisely how to save the 8%?
Conclusion:
Its likely that no one person knows yet how much,if at all, the headcount will be affected. Pressures will cause normal attrition to increase. A 20% growth rate will require many 1000's more employees within 12 months if the economy holds together. Dell will make best effort to keep good people.
