<<we are in the grips of the mediocre.>>

I think we can agree to disagree. The political pendulum tends to swing both ways. If George is as bad as you say, it will swing back your way soon enough.
Take care

<<<True, but the symbols of that greatness will either be the empty houses of the former Gates family, or something done collectively by the government as representative of the people as a whole>>

To me the greatness of a country is not measured by the monuments built by the government. I do not stand in awe of the pyramids of Egypt. How many thousands of people died constructing these buildings to comemerate the Pharaohs ? Was it worth it even though it lasted thousands of years? Not in my mind. Building monuments is what governments do best. Look at Washington DC. Give me Disneyland

Dear dear dear TigerPaw, once again I am amazed by your words. >>>something done collectively by the government as representative of the people as a whole.
duuuhhhhhh To me only mediocre minds cannot see the wonders of our age.

Mediocre ???? This is the greatest most marvelous time to be alive. My father came to American as a baby and as a youth roamed the railroad track looking for coal to heat the house. He worded hard with my mother and gave me an education and now I have three, 2 now engineers and one on the way next year. My first is buying his first house at 26 and paying 10 times what I paid for my first house. My first is designing the next generation of broadband wireless communications.

If you believe the government as representative of the people can collectively create anything of greatness you are truly ignorant of what America is about. This is a photo essay I did last week about the results group of independent individuals collectively working to create a mindboogling great tool that benefits all mankind.

The ability of the internet to provide all information to all creates an environment that liberates many from the lies and the spin and the shallow analysis of vacant liberal minds. Al Gore and the lies of the democrat's lost because of the truth provided by the internet.
