Potential IT market . . .

Rick, the potential size of an IT biometrics market could be virtually universal, with biometrics as an essential component of all Web hardware, cell phone and laptop locks, transaction software, etc. Biometric authentication could become a bigger market than the CA market.

Or not. We could get headed off at the pass by smart cards, which aren't as secure as biometric smart cards but less expensive. I saw one study, from France, that said that ordinary smart cards cut down on credit card fraud from POS terminals by 80%. The price/performance ratio there may favor a non-biometric approach. However, as biometrics drop in price, the decision point changes . . . and internet credit fraud rates may still linger at present levels with simple smart cards. (Eventually, as more information is held on the smart cards, I think they'll need biometric protection. But that could be many years away, too long to bet on one company's fortunes.)

Biometrics may only be adopted in niche markets, such as health, government, and finances. IDX could become very profitable, but not a monster company.

My point was only that the range in the size of the potential market is really enormous. Uncertainty is not our friend. We need to see meaningful deployments to attract investors, especially in a bear market.
