Republicans are just a guilty as Dems when it comes to Social Security.

When SS was enacted it was intended as a suppliment NOT sole income and really never to be used anyway since back then few lived over 65 years of age. Payments into it were very small. Since then people live longer and the coverage has been expanded so much, (disabilities etc.) that it's basically welfare now...but someone has to pay..big time when the boomers collect. By then, 1 worker will be supporting 3 retirees. Or so some dreamer thinks...

When it comes down to it, the reason is two fold. People expect $2 back for every $1 they put in and the politicians give it to them to get votes...
