Ten,

Gas in England is normally about $4.30 a gallon. That doesn't seem to have any impact on people's driving habits.

On the other hand, no gas at the station was quite an effective deterrent to driving.

I know someone who traded in his rental for a new one, just to get a new tank of gas.

Cheer up !! The traffic in Tokyo is even worse than in Seoul.

By the way, gas in Korea is around $4/gal, and still the streets of Seoul are a nightmare, like twice the traffic of Silicon Valley. Oh, and get this: During Korean Thanksgiving, everyone leaves Seoul and goes out to the countryside to visit family. The problem is that everyone then comes back to Seoul at the same time. A trip that normally takes four hours took twelve hours due to all the traffic.

Tenchusatsu,

That's good...the extra $$$ can be used to develop alternative mass transit.
