Don't think I've ever been to a state or county fair, but I did go to the Cockroach Festival in Santa Fe (the Texas version, near Houston) last fall. I was invited by an old friend who teaches in a men's state prison school and is a sponsor for the prison's musical group which was performing at the festival. The group was dressed in its prison whites and did a lot of gospel and contemporary country music and was quite professional. After their performance, I left without investigating why the event is called the Cockroach Festival. Not sure I really wanted to know.
