Our founding fathers were concerned with the issue of "taxation without representation", and not the amount of the taxes.

Taxation without representation was the main reason for the revolution. That doesn't mean the level of taxation was not something that they where concerned about. Our current level of taxation would IMO have resulted in a very negative reaction even if it was with representation.
