Pravin: "Who's going to make 100 million SOI wafers?" he said. "Ultimately it's a business decision."

Considering that we know AMD is (almost done) installing oxygen implanters, AMD won't have that problem.

150 million microprocessors or more will be produced world wide in Y2001...AMD wants 30 to 40 million of those to be AMD microprocessors....Wrt SOI, being smaller is advantageous, it seems, at least in the initial stages of SOI evolution...(INTC's walls seem to be closing in from all directions!!!)

I found the article about Intel losing HP's PA_RISC foundry business to IBM very interesting.

Yes indeed. Contrary to the conclusions by the author, I see
no diminishing in HP's PA RISC effort either in design or commitment. I think they are actively hedging their bets. As for IBM's Shahidi, I know him very well. In my opinion, he, at times, is subject to exaggeration. I still maintain that only a 10%-15% speed improvement(all other things equal) due to SOI will be realized. Also, the infrastructure needed to generate the quantity of wafers needed even for AMD's share of the x86 market is considerable and very much
unappreciated by this thread.
