SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- PMC-Sierra Chief Financial Officer John Sullivan said that of the 90-plus chips the communications chipmaker generates revenue from, 40 of them were brought into existence in the last two years.

He expects that in 2001 chips that went into production in 1999 will grow significantly despite the currently soft market. Speaking at the Banc of America Technology Conference Thursday, he added that PMC's sales should come back in the second half of 2001.

Bob Bailey, the chief executive of PMC (PMCS: news, msgs) , pointed out that the company is spending the bulk of its research-and-development money on its optical networking business. He also said PMC is designing in 0.13-micron technology and that it has other products in development that will be announced shortly.

"Everybody must get bandwidth -- otherwise, these applications don't make sense," Bailey remarked.

In recent trading, PMC shares closed up 13 cents to $58.88.
