hi mag

"Perhaps they sent the update through a live update but my subscription to that service ran out so I cannot use it"

it became available via liveupdate, as i suspected. you're going to have to spring for the cost of an annual subscription to the virus defs if you don't have the fix and you want it.

here's this from an archived email bulletin....

NAV 2000 email scanner "hole" fixed

In December BugNet reported a potential security hole using the email
scanner portion of NAV 2000. This was never a real security "hole,"
but to remove any doubts, Symantec issued a patch that "closed" the
hole. It also closed a way of crashing the email scanner from another
machine, discovered in lab testing. For full details, see

symantec.com "

"Situation:

You have heard of a security hole created by the Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2000 email protection feature. You want to know what Symantec has done about it.

Solution:

On December 27, 1999, Symantec released a LiveUpdate patch for all versions of Norton AntiVirus 2000 (version 6.0) for Windows 95/98/NT to change the port settings used with the email protection feature. This patch addressed concerns raised by BugNet and reported on MSNBC, CNET, and other media and Web reporting sites. In order to apply the patch, you must run LiveUpdate from within Norton AntiVirus or Norton SystemWorks and select the program and virus definition updates."
