Children don't vote. Tell people they will have to pay a lot more for gas and you'll be out of an elected job in 4 years...tell them they will have to take less SS or medicare or some other entitlement and you're out of the same job...

I think you put the finger on something. Democrats treat citizens like children, and expect children-like behaviour from them. Republicans treat people like adults, and expect them to behave like adults.
