Does it not seem that the software sector is holding up much better than the networkers/optical etc..

Uh well, no actually... high end software was slammed just like everybody else and some companies like ariba really were clobbered. I was actually thinking that juniper was holding up great being down 50% off his highs or so until the cisco numbers came out. So comm and software took about the same pummeling from what I can see. Oracle is the cisco of software (yikes I'm going to get clobbered for even implying Larry can stand on a par with Chambers.. <gg>) but anyway Oracle is down about like cisco is here.

On a bright (very bright) fundamental note though, business automation on the internet is just starting to happen. Most of the companies doing business automation like i2 are actually 10+ years old, which means we haven't even seen the new crop of business software which will utilize the internet efficiently... the current crop had to retrofit their core technology.

Apparently the original amazon business model had amazon as a virtual corporation with a fully visible supply chain over the internet. They didn't want to stock inventory, instead they wanted visibility to each suppliers inventory real-time. The software wasn't there to make this happen so amzn had to warehouse inventory and that was where their problems began. A bunch of supply chain software companies are trying to work on this problem and when this stuff gets out the door I can't see how it won't be another huge wave in internet usage.

So I'm bullish on the internet software and networkers, long term, but of course picking that individual stock or monthly trend is another matter entirely. I doubt the mkt will do much in either direction for 6 mos or so, thats my thinking now anyway.
