AMy - re: "Will it be Intel inside or Hitachi inside, say 5 or 10 years from now? "

Hitachi had an early start with their SH series - and it was adopted by many manufacturers of Windows CE machines (Cassiopoeia comes to mind)

However, none these were commercially successful.

The first Windows CE machine that appears to be gaining traction is the Compaq iPAQ H3650 - which, as you know, contains a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor.

Ergo - Intel seems to now have the inside track - especially since the Xscale follow-ons are already available with much better speed and lower power consumption - as well as smaller die sizes.

Palm and Visor are both REPORTEDLY going to adopt the StrongARM - or ARM (from Motorola) - architecture in next generation processors.

Re: "How do you think Intel stacks up when compared to Hitachi? What exactly is the long-term competitive edge? "

See above.
