Paul: Motorola was the big proponent of SOI after IBM - and apparently AMD and Six-Figure-Hector-from-Motorola are going along for the ride.

I'm a huge fan of SOI, but maybe that's because I'm a theoretician, not an experimentalist ;)

As for AMD just being along for the ride, the HiP7 (if that's its name) process is not just Moto's. AMD is much more engaged (more money, more people) in the development now than they were when the HiP6 process was being developed.

At one point there was a lot of speculation that AMD was going to have 2 .13mu processes - one with SOI (for Hammers) and one without (for Thoroughbred and Appaloosa). I don't know which is more worrying... Having (developing) multiple processes would likely tax AMD's resources quite significantly.

The Black Diamond stuff actually worries me the most. Sure, it's supposed to be an "evolutionary" step, but it's still a pretty big unknown for them. Is anyone actually using this stuff at commercial level?
