Support levels on the way down are much different than support on the way up. You can look for and find, far more often than not, substantial buying interest at support levels for a stock that is backing off within a clearly defined uptrend; more so if the market trend is also up. In a down market traders (and others) tend to take a far more cautious approach...waiting to see if support holds, waiting for the other guys to do the buying, waiting for the reversal to occur before buying. In a downtrend, prior "support" is too often a tenuous area that offers little in the way of support.
