Playboy renounces the world to become a
monk
By Bruce Johnston in Rome

A SICILIAN playboy who claims scores of female conquests and nine
illegitimate children is to become a monk.

The man, identified only as A P and described as a wealthy, married
businessman and grandfather, said he was leaving his family and home on the
island of Lipari off Sicily for a monastery near Zurich to prepare to take his
vows as Brother Roberto.

He said yesterday: "I want to live in poverty," as he waited alone to board a
ferry for the island. "I implored my loved ones to remain at home. I did not
want to make them cry. However painful it may be for them, they have given
me their support."

Asked why he had waited so long to make his decision, the "Playboy of the
Aeolian Islands" replied: "Because only now have I realised what the essence
of life is all about: to help the suffering. I consider myself a great sinner. I have
had more love affairs than I can count. I reckon I have fathered at least nine
children through encounters where I have made many people suffer. Now I
want to help others."

He said he had decided to call himself Brother Roberto because of an affair
he had as a young man. "I was 20 and an English girl I was with gave birth to
a boy. We had been having a happy affair, or so I thought, and we brought
this baby into the world. I left after a few months.

"I was later told that the baby, called Roberto, died after only a year when he
fell from his high chair. I am convinced that if I had been there it wouldn't have
happened."
