Hi pass pass, no doubt, InP will be exploited for 40 gigabit operation. But what I was referring to were the routing attributes of filtering, lookups and forwarding at the 40 gig rate, not wirespeed transmission characteristics.

The routing functions require processing and lookups, which often consume processor cycles. The layer one functions at 40 Gb/s, on the other hand, are straightforward in comparison, operating at the specified clock rate, albeit modulated.

This calls to mind earllier lag times between when a new SONET speed was achieved, and when the router ports to operate at those speeds became available. For example, OC 192 has been around for a couple of years, and only recently has there been a router port/card to function at Layer 3 at the 10 Gb/s rate.

In short, I was referring to the hurdles in achieving routing functions at the higher-speed at the port level, not wirespeed transmission. Comments and corrections are welcome.
