Vignette Implements Network Appliance Content Delivery Solutions for Rapid, Efficient Distribution of Critical Information
Company Dramatically Reduces Travel and IT Costs by Streaming Corporate Training Videos and Executive Briefings to Employees Across the Globe
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2001-- Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content delivery solutions, today announced that Vignette Corporation (Nasdaq:VIGN - news), a provider of customer-driven Internet applications, has implemented Network Appliance(TM) content delivery solutions to deliver critical information quickly and efficiently throughout the company. Vignette previously deployed multiple NetApp® filers and has now implemented NetCache(TM) solutions as well to deliver rich streaming content -- including product training and executive briefings -- to employees around the world.

Vignette's rapid growth has resulted in an employee base spread across 100 locations worldwide. Until recently, those employees regularly traveled to Vignette headquarters in Austin, Texas, for orientation, training, and company meetings. Vignette was interested in a more timely, cost-effective, flexible, and efficient way to communicate with employees. They considered filming events and distributing tapes, but soon realized it was too costly and cumbersome. Streaming media offered a solution, but there were two obstacles: large numbers of streams originating in Austin could overload Vignette's network capacity, and remotely deployed general purpose servers complete with streaming software would be difficult to administer. Vignette decided to implement Network Appliance NetCache solutions to deliver streaming media from the edge of the network, simplifying IT resource requirements, reducing overall costs, and eliminating network bottlenecks.

``We realize how important it is for Vignette employees to continually share and exchange ideas,'' said David Graham, IT director of operations. ``However, keeping employees connected can be an expensive process. Like most corporations right now, we're very cautious in our spending and continually seek to maximize our investments. Vignette has been saving money with NetApp filers for years, and determined that implementing an end-to-end solution -- from storage at the core with NetApp filers, out to the edge of the network with NetCache solutions -- would create the most efficient storage network possible. For example, prior to using the Network Appliance solution to deliver streaming media, Vignette would fly more than 100 people to Austin every quarter for the company meeting. Cutting this travel expense saves Vignette well over $100,000 per quarter. In essence, these solutions pay for themselves almost immediately.''

``We're sensitive to the fact that companies right now are looking to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to IT spending,'' said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing, Network Appliance. ``The savings Vignette and others seek would be much more difficult to achieve without the appliance simplicity and bandwidth savings of NetApp solutions. Competitive solutions, such as general-purpose servers in remote locations, require more personnel to administer and use more bandwidth to deliver multiple media streams to remote offices. Vignette has been able to avoid those drawbacks by installing NetCache appliances at offices in the UK, Australia, Massachusetts, California, and at company headquarters in Austin. The devices are so easy to administer that the company does not even need a technical person at each site.''

That was a pretty unimportant bit of PR that is more important to the value chain than to NTAP. Can't spend much time now.
