The companies said they would research ways of ``extending the PlayStation experience into the Vodafone mobile phone environment.'' This would initially include allowing Vodafone customers to connect their phones to their PlayStation games consoles and providing PlayStation hints and tips via text messages and wireless Internet services. More interestingly, both companies hinted at a broader alliance that could provide games over third-generation (3G) mobile networks. They said that as their relationship evolves, their focus will broaden to include the development of new game environments and software applications. ``This is the first building-block toward a very exciting, long-term partnership...that we believe will help develop our wireless gaming strategy,'' Paul Donovan, managing director -- commercial of Vodafone UK Ltd., said in a statement. Chris Deering, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, added: ``We are very excited about what this could mean for participative gaming and information services as bandwidth expands on the cellular front.'' Mobile phone companies believe entertainment and gaming services will help them recoup their huge investments in 3G licenses, and they are expected to seek help from companies like Sony. Vodafone and Sony will initially develop services within the UK, with the intention of rolling them out to Europe and then the rest of the world.
