John,

Perhaps Eli will wait until MMC is deeper entrenched in the mind
of the consumer before he pushes for MMC licenses. Perhaps the same
is true for CompactFlash. To be frank I am tired of waiting.

I am also tired of fluffy press releases like this...

siliconinvestor.com

First, nobody can afford a 512 MB CompactFlash card.

Second, the 128 MB SmartMedia is probably a low margin
Toshiba card that SanDisk is selling in competition with
its own CompactFlash products. I hardly see this as a
victory for us. In fact, I see the FlashVision venture
as a big boost for SmartMedia and Toshiba despite what Eli
said at the shareholders' meeting last year. That is, that
SanDisk's and Toshiba's final products from the FlashVision JV
won't overlap. Somehow that just doesn't hold water any more.

UMC rallying

Message 15342844

Also, reductions in cap ex announced.

I read yesterday that spot power outages continue to
plague Taiwan's industrial parks in the region, particularly
at Taiwan Semiconductor. Hope UMC is unaffected, but that
seems pretty unlikely.
