You can't hear them if they are not making noise, drifting perhaps. Biologics are quite loud.

Surfacing is by far the most dangerous thing you do in a sub for just this reason. Thermo's, your own noise, in your baffles, biologics, etc. are some of the many reasons they may not have heard them.
