perhaps he used the aggregate cap and divided by aggregate GAAP earnings? it seems that way to me.

I read the article and the earning were weighted equal to the cap of the company relative to the other companies in the index. I did not bookmark the article, but I think it was from the NY Times. It looked like a fair evaluation. What they did include was the losses from the companies in the index. There are a few dot bombs that probably cause the PE to be so high.
