Jim, the message containing the virus has to have an executable file that must be opened to cause the damage, so there is always an attachment that they want you to open. Maybe there are exceptions to this that others know about.

Executable File
An executable file refers to a program file. Executables in DOS and Windows usually have an .exe or a .com extension. In UNIX and Macintosh environments, executable files can have any name.

Under the View menu, select Layout...

Then uncheck "Show preview pane"

You will need to open your emails manually by double-clicking or right-clicking.
