As I said, I read Kempis sympathetically:

a meditation that I truly appreciated...

until I came to the summing-up, or 'moral' of the piece...

which 'moral' was precisely, to one who has observed the world with her eyes open instead of meditatively closed, an injunction to the misfortunate to accept their lot passively and a rationale for the fortunate to groove on peaceful brain waves instead of doing something about those hideous earthly travails that would be remediable, were they to care to remedy them.

Like, for example, the hideous suffering resulting from overpopulation.

I do not despise fortitude. Where did you get such a notion? I could not have survived my life thus far, had I not developed a rather abundant supply of it.
