Optimus has selected Ericsson as the key supplier of UMTS infrastructure. Ericsson will supply the core network and Optimus' radio access network for the southern part of Portugal.

Optimus' decision in favor of Ericsson is a clear vote of confidence in the leading supplier of mobile networks in Portugal. It also confirms Ericsson's global leadership in 3G. "We are pleased to continue our excellent relationship with Ericsson also in the next generation of mobile networks and services," says Augusto Azevedo, responsible for Optimus' UMTS Launch Office.

Ericsson has been supplying Optimus with GSM infrastructure since it launched service in 1998 and Ericsson's deployment capabilities in Portugal have contributed to the rapid growth of Optimus' subscriber base.

"We are really pleased with the decision of Optimus. This if proof of our past efforts, our continued focus on competence and stability in Portugal, and Ericsson's global leadership," comments Eduardo Restuccia, President of Ericsson in Portugal. "Most importantly, the partnership with the Optimus team, who are part of the largest private industry group in Portugal, is a milestone on the way to the development of the Mobile Internet in Portugal."
