Your caution in light of the current situation makes sense to me.

The distortion of valuation created by massive indexing has yet to be widely recognized and unwound, IMO. I don't see broad index plays as a viable long term strategy at the moment. So unless a person is prepared to actively trade the indexes, or stray off the beaten path, the sidelines might be the best place to be. BWDIK?

08:32 AM ECONOMY TALK: Retail sales rose 0.7% in January, higher than the 0.5% increase the market was expecting. December sales were unrevised at +0.1%. Excluding autos, sales were up 0.8%, also stronger than the 0.4% rise the market was expecting. Durable goods sales rose 0.8%, building materials were up 1.1% and furniture sales rose 1.5%. Sales by automotive dealers rose 0.6%. More to come...
