I can't remember the 5 foster homes- so I don't know how much that shaped me. But my mother tells me- whenever they left the house- I used to ask them if I was getting a new mom and dad now. I was not your typical child. I think that rootlessness may have left me more aware of the vagaries of life- how whimsical our fate is, and how stability is an illusion. It is a comfortable illusion- but it is still illusion.

Perhaps that is what shaped my view that there are many things worse than death. And that being a helpless child in a horrendous situation, is one of those things.
