I rather desire a 10-year holiday in luxury with a charming but highly expensive girlfriend... I'll vote for any government guaranteeing me that <g>

Then you'd be a insider - that already happens if you are rich. You get to take that girlfriend anywhere you want, mention your business once and get a subsidy. The legitimate role of government is determined by the people. Not just the rich people, but all the people. People in Sweden can get a doctor to prescribe them a stay in Italy to recover from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). It is limited in frequency, of course, but the state-run resort is pretty nice by all accounts.

I know you know what I mean. <wink> I see government's role as guiding the invisible hand rather than just having the invisible hand guiding us without a brain. Basic Econ 101: What you tax you get less of, what you subsidize, you get more of. So if we subsidize educated youth, guess what? We get educated, skilled youth. Right now we subsidize locking youthful offenders in prison. That certainly has provided us with more youthful offenders locked up in prison. We should try something different IMO.
