Neocon,

Lol, you have a much higher opinion of Zimmerman than I do. I do like his music and have much respect for this song writing abilities, but his musical ideas never impressed me. He has a nice sense of structure and writes above average melodies. Still he was as much about what he said than how he said it. I think he would have starved as a musician in Mozarts day.

McCartney is a very interesting topic for discussion. I must say that I am very disappointed that he has done so very little the past 20 years on par with that of his first 15 years. Paul gets high everyday, and has been doing so for 30+ years. I think it took its toll. In his prime he was the very best ever at the "pop" pop tune. He and Lennon were a once in a life time pairing. Even his early stuff with Wings was excellent. Then the musical ideas stopped. That stuff he puts out now is just the same old 1,3,5 variations, but they are missing the "McCartney" hooks that made his stuff so great. He will always be one of my favorites and IMO, he did enough in the first 15 years to last two lifetimes.

McCartney would have worked in Mozart's day. I don't know if he would have been his equal, but we might know his name today. That is a pretty tough one actually.

BTW, I love the story about the time Linda was waiting in the executive lounge at JFK for a flight back to England. Peter Brown approached her and asked what she had bought that day in NY, as she had two large shopping bags under her seat. Linda leans over and says that she just scored a couple pounds of some great dope. Peter Brown saved the day by canceling their flights and getting out of the airport, but I guess it never really occurred to Linda that this "dope" was not legal. She was just going to waltz through customs with it. From the same book they explain how Lennon smuggled enough liquid LSD to intoxicate the entire country of England. How? in two sealed film containers labeled for the film "Help". Guess even the customs guys don't want to expose film. Brown's book really is a great read. Until recently it was the only authorized Beatles biography.
