SMARTMONEY.COM: Yearning For Earnings
By MONICA RIVITUSO
(This report was originally published late Monday.)

Thursday

Chip maker Analog Devices (ADI) reports fiscal first-quarter results after the close - and, like its rivals, it has already set its sights lower. The company warned last month that it was seeing a 'significant slowdown' in new orders, as well as order cancellations. First-quarter revenues should fall 4% sequentially to $775 million. Consensus estimates call for earnings of 50 cents a share, compared with 25 cents a year ago. And this won't likely be a one-quarter blip; management said that weakness should reverberate to the second quarter as well. Second-quarter sales should be flat to slightly below first-quarter sales, while earnings should be flat sequentially. Investors can tune into a live Web cast at 4:30 p.m. EST.

On Thursday we'll find out how things are going, but I agree with your point on downgrades.
