Nokia ups China investments by
US$700M in '00

(12 February 2001) Nokia rang in as the largest
foreign-invested exporting enterprise in China when it
increased its investment by more than US$700 million
in 2000.

According to its annual report for 2000, the company’s
sales in China reached US$2.8 billion and its earnings
from exports exceeded US$1.5 billion in 2000,
according to the Feb. 3 Xinmin Wanbao (Xinmin
Evening News).

The annual report showed that China had become
Nokia’s second largest mobile phone market, with sales
that accounted for about 10 percent of its global
market. All Nokia mobile phones sold in China were
produced by two joint ventures located in Beijing and
Dongguan (Guangdong province).

Nokia produced 120 million mobile phones during 2000,
10 percent of which were for sale in China, the article
said. At the end of 2000, Nokia had 250 service
centers, as well as 800 stores or counters selling its
mobile phones in the country.
