I agree very much with this basic idea on the limits of the talent wellspring. It seems that each of the great ones has a set of ideas, then a variation on those ideas, and finally a period of retrospect where they rest on the previous work.

Maybe the nature of talent at this level is finite. I will never know -g- Maybe the muse leaves. Maybe the deal with devil is for only so many gold records. Its a very interesting idea, but maybe the well just runs dry.

Did Shakespeare's work degrade later in life?

Don't get me wrong, I really do like Bob. "Tangled Up In Blue" is a personal favorite. I like his ideas, but just don't see him cutting teeth with Mozart, Bach, Jimi, or Eddie.
