LA QUINTA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Xilinx Inc.'s CFO echoed an oft-repeated theme among tech companies trying to clarify their financial outlook, telling investors Tuesday he doesn't have a clear picture about the specialty chip-maker's near-term sales outlook.
"There are a lot of questions about where we're going over the next three to six months," Kris Chellam told money managers at Goldman Sachs' tech symposium in this Southern California resort city. "I don't have a clue."

Chellam said Xilinx (XLNX: news, msgs) plans to take advantage of a downturn in the chip market, putting the company's strong balance sheet to work. "We feel this is the time to outspend the competition and focus on information technology investments and research and development."

A high-priority move the company will be making the transition to larger silicon wafers and with a technology that relies on smaller-diameter processors
